Taking a macro photo of a superbly tied Atlantic salmon fly is a lot more work than it appears, but the finished product is a great combination of style and color. These photographs are a small sampling from an upcoming event in Seattle, Washington. On May 17 and 18, 2014, Atlantic salmon fly tying enthusiasts will experience an event like no other. Hosted by the Northwest Atlantic Salmon Fly Guild, the Atlantic Salmon Fly International (ASFI) is a first of its kind event celebrating the art and passion of the Atlantic salmon fly. Historically, it has been the zealous salmon fly tiers sharing their knowledge, face to face, over the years that have kept these patterns alive. This robust tradition can only survive as long as we continue to make new friends and share our passion with fellow enthusiasts.
The best Atlantic salmon fly tiers from four continents will be tying simple hairwings to the most complex Victorian featherwings. They will demonstrate their skills and share their knowledge on tying and fishing these storied patterns. ASFI will have hook-making demonstrations, dye masters will teach the craft of colors, and there will be seminars on history, design, and methods. Some notable world-renowned tiers include Mikko Stenberg, Jens Pilgaard, Timo Kontio, Dave McNeese, John Shewey, Paul Little, Brian Burnett, John Olschewsky, Sebastian Letelier, and Marvin Nolte. These photos are just a sampling of their exquisite flies. Orri Vigfusson from Iceland, chairman of the The North Atlantic Salmon Fund, will be in attendance. The profits from this event will go to Healing Waters and the North Atlantic Salmon Fund. This unique event will be a fantastic opportunity to learn from the masters.

I am an avid steelhead fisherman and member of the Washington Steelhead Flyfishers and I serve as president of the Northwest Atlantic Salmon Fly Guild. I have participated in salmon fly tying competitions worldwide and have demonstrated fly tying internationally. My fly fishing passion includes the pursuit of trevally, in addition to steelhead. Making these photographs reminded me, and added to my appreciation of the artistry in Atlantic salmon fly tying.
