The hype surrounding fly fishing for permit is legendary. I was in a boat when my pal made a great cast to a feeding permit. The marl bottom was perfect for one short strip, and then leave it and let the fly settle. The little swirling mud trail is all a permit needs to come over and tip on the fly. All that happened, but a hovering tern was watching and dove down and flew off with the crab pattern just as the permit started to tail. That’s not hype, but it feeds the fire.
